Back Up Your Important Files! NOW!

30 August 2008 One Comment

In a post earlier this morning, i had a list of "things to do" and one of them was to backup my websites.  If you are reading this, then you more than likely own a computer.  If you own a computer, you more than likely have personal files saved on your hard drive.

Those files saved on your hard drive more than likely include:

  1. Pictures
  2. Excel files
  3. Word documents
  4. Songs
  5. Videos
  6. Downloads
  7. Your ENTIRE system

You may have all of these listed above, as i do, and MORE.  Or you may have just one or two.  Whatever the case, i CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, BACKUP YOUR FILES!

There is no worse feeling than walking into your office, den, bedroom, where ever you keep your computer, and hearing that dreaded clicking noise. That is if you leave your computer on 24/7 like i do. I've never understood why people turn off their computers hahaha. Anyway, even if you do turn it off every day, imagine turning on your computer and you get the heart stopping "DISK FAILURE" on your screen, or any of the number of errors you may get when your hard drive crashes.

If it's mechanical, it'll break, so it's not IF your computer's hard drive crashes, it's WHEN! And trust me, it'll happen!

Imagine losing all those precious pictures of your kids, family, friends or even pictures for your business related stuff (Barry) HA! What about all those songs you've downloaded (legally i hope) or all those excel files and word documents you've created for school or work or just for personal use. In one instant all that could be GONE!

There is absolutely NO excuse for not backing up your stuff. I myself have thousands of songs, pictures and videos. I have hundreds of programs i've downloaded for personal and business use. At the moment i maintain about 9 websites and all the files for those alone, if lost, would cost me big time! And i learned a hard lesson a while back that not backing up my hard drive can be devastating!

Whatever method you use to backup your files, DO IT, and do it now!

There are several methods you can use to backup your files.

  1. Burn them to a CD or DVD or even a Floppy disk.  If you use this method make a couple copies and put them in a fireproof safe or safe deposit box.
  2. Great Deals on Blank Media

  3. Use imaging software to make a complete system or file backup.  Some computers come with this software preloaded, if not it can be purchased.
  4. Great Deals on Image Software

  5. Copy your files to an external hard drive.  This is the method i use.  You can purchase an external hard drive that plugs into your USB port fairly cheap these days.  The low cost of an external hard drive out ways the cost of losing all your files!
  6. Great Deals on External Hard Drives

  7. Use a USB Thumb Drive, also called a Flash Drive.  These are very inexpensive and easy to use.  They come in many different capacities to suite your needs.
  8. Great Deals on USB Flash Flash Drives

  9. Use online services to backup your files and data.  Yes there are even places online that you can use to backup your important files and data.  Just use your favorite search engine and search for "backup your files online" and you will find plenty of resources.

There are many more methods available to backup your files and data. The ones i listed above are just a few of the many ways you can do backups. The main thing is to find a way and DO IT!

Also, remember to back your computer up often! If you're like me and are always downloading new stuff, adding pictures or have any type of small business, then back your files and data up once a week, or at least once a month. When you've lost it all, you'll wish you had!

I would love to hear your comments and questions about this. If you have other methods not listed please share them. If you have any questions or need any help, ask them! Myself or others reading this post can help and you'll have peace of mind knowing all your important files and data are safe!
