Got High-Tech Problems? How ’bout Some Low-Tech Solutions!

3 March 2009 13 Comments

Well here it is, the middle of the week!  Let's talk about something besides Blogging and Internet Marketing!

I heard a little blurb about this on the radio the other day and did some looking around and found some interesting things I thought I'd share with you all!  You may already know about these things or you may not!  Either way, I hope you learn something!  If nothing else, I hope it makes you scratch your head and say "I never thought of that" ha!

7 High-Tech Problems You Can Fix With Low-Tech Solutions

1 - The dreaded card swipe! So how many times have you been in line at the store or at a restaurant, you pull out the plastic to pay and the cashier begins to swipe, then swipe again, then swipe again...  You turn around and people are lining up behind you, tapping feet and staring at you and cursing you under their breath!  It happens all the time, for what ever reason the card readers won't read your card and there you stand helpless!

Solution - Have the cashier wrap the card in one layer of plastic, such as a sandwich bag or saran wrap and reswipe.  You could always keep a small piece in your wallet or the ladies purse.  Not sure why it works, but it does and may save you some embarrasing moments!

2 - Keep That Cellphone Battery Charged! Bet you didn't know that heat causes a battery to lose its charge faster!  It's been proven that cellphone batteries last longer if kept cooler!  Yup, your 98.6 degree body can drain your battery faster if kept in your pocket!

Solution - Try a belt case or purse when carrying your cellphone.  If you find yourself away from home without a charger, slide the battery off and put it in the coolest place possible, even a fridge, to slow the drainage on the battery!

3 - Extend The Range Of That Remote Car Key! I'm not quite sure why you would want to do this, unless you lost your car and need to hit the alert button to find it.  But just in case you needed to use your remote for your car and were out of range, here's your answer!

Solution - First, look around to see who's looking at you because you're going to look like a dork hahah!  Take the metal key part and hold it against your chin and press the button while holding it there.  Supposedly the fluids in your head make a great conductor, therefore giving you more range!  So I'd say, the bigger the head, the more range haha!

4 - Out Of Ink Again!- I HATE printers!  I realize they are a necessity, but I despise paying high prices for the cartridges! Especially when you can buy a new printer for the price of a few ink cartridges!  Have you ever gotten down to the last page or two of an important project you're printing out and run out of ink?  UGGGGG!

Solution - Try removing the cartridge and holding a hair dryer on it for 2 or 3 minutes and putting it back in the printer while it's still warm.  Most of the time when your cartridge is near empty, there is build up and hardened ink along the nozzles and this method just may give you enough to finish your project!

5 - Uhh, I Dropped My Cell In The Toilet! Yes it happens to the best of us!  We won't get into the discussion of why you were playing with your blackberry on the pot!  haha!  But when it does happen, you'll be prepared!

Solution - QUICKLY take the battery off!  Wipe the phone down gently and put the phone in a bag  or jar of uncooked rice for at least 12 hours!  The uncooked rice will soak up that water and hopefully save you from having to buy a new cell phone!

6 - That Wi-Fi  Is Just Not Reaching Out Far Enough! With so many people going wireless these days, having a wireless network at home is becoming very common place.  One thing folks run into is range problems!  Your wireless router is made to radiate that signal in all directions.  That's fine if it's in the middle of the house, but say your wireless router is on one end of the house and your favorite recliner where you sit and play on your laptop is on the other end!  You may be right on the fringe of that signal and not getting  a strong enough signal to maintain a good connection.

Solution - You can make a very simple and very inexpensive reflector to help your range!  Click Here for the instructions!

7 - Clean Those Dirty Discs! What's worse than having than taking the girlfriend out for a ride on the town, sliding in the CD you just burned or bought of all your favorite get busy songs and ...... skip, skip, skip!  Sux huh?  Or say you've invited some friends over to watch a movie, the popcorn and drinks are all ready, but your DVD won't play??  How embarrassing!

Solution - Grab that bottle of vodka or mouthwash, soak a washcloth with it and gently rub the surface to clean it.  It's mucho cheaper than that high dollar cleaning solution they want to sell you!  Alcohol is a very powerful solvent and will take care of that messy CD or DVD!

So there ya go!  Seven high-tech problems with low-tech fixes!

Do you have any suggestions for simple solutions to big problems?

Have you ever used any of these methods?

I used to tell Sarah (bff) that to recharge regular batteries, you had to slap them together a bunch of times… so she would spend hours slapping batteries together… it was funny :)

Just for those who are reading, I realize this doesn’t work, I just wanted to see if she would do it :)

Nice post Jake. Tried and tested 3 and it does work. Its something to do with the teeth in your mouth which acts like a conductor and if you have cavities and fillings, thats even better.

I saw 1st tip in the supermarket and it really works.
I’ve got one more tip for you. If you need to send text message or make a quick phonecall and your battery is dead try to remove it from the phone and make it warm. Probably you can make a quick call then.
