Do You Want Your Blog To Be Walmart Or Starbucks?

13 April 2009 15 Comments

First things first...

To the person who left the nasty comment for this post, Duke Basketball - 2009 ACC Champs, the reason that your comment did not get approved is because you left a fake email and nasty name.  One thing about my blog, "My Life as I See It", is that I've always welcomed any and all comments.  BUT, if you want to leave comments like you did and "hide" behind a fake name and email, then just save yourself some time by not commenting!  Ohhhh, and even though you didn't want to leave a name or email, you did leave your IP address, so since you're not too far from Mt. Airy, maybe we could sit and drink a beer and talk Duke Basketball when you gain some courage!   Nuff said...

Sooo, did everybody have a wonderful Easter weekend?  Misty and I worked our butts off Saturday, planting shrubs and flowers and fighting the wind!  Sunday was a nice day of R&R!  I don't think I looked at my computer but maybe once late that evening!  haha That's a first for me in quite a while!

Ok... let's talk blogs and websites for a little bit.  I've talked about it before a few times, but wanted to get some input again since I've picked up quite a few more readers in the past month or so.

Is Your Blog Like Walmart Or Starbucks

Of course you always want to please your readers when they visit your blog, but what are you trying to please them with?  Most blogs I visit are pretty tight when it comes to what they are blogging about, meaning if that blog is about Internet Marketing, they rarely stray from the topic of Internet Marketing.   Maybe your blog is about niche stores and all you talk about are topics related to finding niches and how to market them properly, keyword research etc etc...  To me, those sites are like Starbucks, meaning they are great blogs, but you're pretty much going to find one thing only and if there are other topics, they're pretty closely related.  What do you find at Starbucks?  Coffee!  Yes they have other products but pretty much everything is coffee related!  And of course it wouldn't make much sense to walk into Starbucks and see automotive parts for sell, Starbucks specializes in coffee!

Now let's move on to a store like Walmart.   Some people love Walmart, some people hate Walmart.  Misty and I do most of our shopping there because of 2 reasons, convinience and low prices.  We can shop for our pets, we can buy flowers in the garden center, we can get medicines and groceries, pretty much anything we're looking for.  Of course Walmart doesn't have everything, but they pretty much have it all covered to an extent.

Here at  "My Life as I See It",  I enjoy offering different things for my readers in hopes that you can find "something" of interest.   Look at all the topics under the categories and you will see a wide variety of things I talk about here at JakeCpuNut.

Internet Marketing
It's Friday
Our Special Times
Jake's Favorite Ebay Products
Shopping
Music Downloads
Movie Downloads

Just to name a few....

No I don't have as much to offer as Walmart, but I'm not a tight niche like Starbucks either. Having said all that, I want to ask you this...

If You Have Your Own Blog

  • Do you wish your blog was more "open" or do you find yourself feeling "stuck" at your blog and not being able to venture out to different topics because of the title and theme of your blog?
  • If you had it all to do over, would you have broader discussions on your blog and offer more or different products and/or categories?

If You Do Not Have A Blog

  • If you don't even have a blog but visit different websites or blogs daily, how do you feel about this blog, JakeCpuNut?
  • Is there too much going on?
  • Is it just right? Would you like to see even more or different things going on when you visit this site or any other blog?

Now this posts actually does have a purpose other than to just have something to talk about.   When I started this blog last year, I had NO CLUE where it would take me.  I'll have to say though that I am very pleased at where it has taken me!

One thing I DO NOT like about JakeCpuNut is the wordpress theme I am using.   It's a nice theme but I really want a more customized theme that works better for what I'm doing here at JakeCpuNut.  I may not get any feedback from any of you on this, but I would love to hear your thoughts.  Hopefully in the upcoming months, JakeCpuNut will be going through some changes!  When I make those changes, I want to make things that are of more interest more accessible to my readers, and take a look at those things that aren't of much interest and do away with them.

Of course I can tell quite a bit from stats, page views, post views, analytics etc etc... but there's nothing like good feedback from your visitors.

So, is there something here at JakeCpuNut that you really enjoy and would hate to see go?

Is there a category or section that you haven't even taken time to visit here at JakeCpuNut?  If not, why?

Speak your mind!

I want to redo some of my sites as well just too busy to find the perfect look and style…

    Hi Jake,

I know this sounds lazy but I like the way that your blog is set out I can’t think of any obvious improvements off the top of my head.

I will, however, keep your questions in mind during future visits and I will certainly let you know if any potential improvements come to mind.

When I first started my current blog, I wrote about business ethics but adopted somewhat of a stringent definition of the topic.

What I found is that my topics were too narrowly focused, and did not provide for a great range of discussions which were interesting to all but a very narrow target audience. As a result, I was finding it difficult to generate discussions amongst readers.

At the start of this year, I decided to allow my blog to evolve to encompass a much broader range of business, ethical and social issues, and I feel that through this process, I am starting to hit on some topics which are more interesting to a slightly broader audience, and I have more freedom with respect to topic choice.

I still write within the topic of business ethics, but my blog has evolved to encompass a much broader view of the topic.

Yo Andrew! Well it’s pretty much just how it’s laid out.. With the store section and videos and advertising, I’m just thinking a better layout to better show what’s available instead of this theme with the 2 right columns… we’ll see haha!

I can see where certain blogs or “niches” need to stay focused, but I really enjoy having it wide open here at JakeCpuNut. I can see at your blog how you have used different topics etc etc, and how it draws more attention and reaches more folks… GOOD FOR YOU!

Question? Do you wish you would have chosen a different domain name other than goodhonestdollar? Or would you ever consider starting another blog with a broader domain name and focusing the goodhonestdollar blog back to it’s original concept?

I’m just curious… in my opinion, even though you have a “niche related” domain name, you could capitalize on the business side of your site even more by “straying” off topic now and again as you are doing now. You may get visitors to your blog that had no intention to learn or read about business ethics, but they end up learning etc etc, because of the other topics you provided that brought them to your blog.

    Hi Jake,

Everything depends on what´s the purpose of your blog. If you are trying to make money out of PPC then you need Niche sites and interaction with readers it is not the main task for that blogs. You actually don´t want people to stay too much time, yu want them to take the way out by clicking in your beautiful PPC ads, lol.

But if you want a very interactive blog like yours maybe those rambligs maybe ok. But still need to have some target audience. It is very difficult to try commenting in a site were you are looking for sneakers and you found a lot of articles of flowers or how to make money, it will take a lot of time to find a sneaker article.

Maybe we should have those very targeted blogs and one like yours always sending people to those sites from your primary blog, so if they are looking for something very specific send them there and they may give you more money than having them trying to look for something between all the bulk, since it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Man, I would definitly change your blog theme, the theme is everywhere now a days and I think a lot of your great content is being lost within all the samyness, if you know what I mean.

I don’t read everything that you blog about, I’m not interested so much in Internet Marketing, which is weird considering thats what you do, haha. I think I said this before sometime ago but I just like the open and honest way you write. The same with Elijahs blog over at the, At Home Couple. I’m not really interested in the whole niche marketing thing, I just love the way he writes about stuff, so normal and down to earth, you know!

Haha, I know what you mean about Walmart, in Scotland we have a shop called Asdas that Walmart owns, and I don’t see the point of going anywhere else for stuff, they have everything! Haha, crazy!

    Mark’s last blog post..Monster, roar!

@ Mark – You nailed it.. there are a huge amount of blogs out there with this theme.. It was ok to start with, to see how things would go, but now I feel as though I need to change it up!

hahaha… maybe you need to do a niche site on your drawing abilities! You could sell the hell out of software or an e-book or whatever you could relate to your work!

Yeah that’s why I like to keep it wide open here at my blog.. a little something for e/body.. just like Walmart and Asdas! ha

I love Elijah’s blog…. he’s as real as it gets!
