How Much Does it Cost to Own a Website?

19 April 2009 18 Comments

Recently our local newspaper ran an article about a new service they are providing.  They are offering a free web service for local businesses which is basically a directory listing.

The news article also states this:

Businesses can also upgrade that free listing through a low-cost paid service that enhances their online presence and raises their profile on popular Web-based search engines such as Google.

From what I can tell, this upgrade (which I'm yet to find out how much the cost is) gives the business more photos and their own website.  I emailed them a few questions about this service and how they use SEO to rank etc etc... maybe I will hear back from them but haven't yet??

They also stated this in the article:

“You could get a basic Web site for your business for $70 a month, and have somebody to help you maintain it,” said Peter Cook, marketing director for The Mount Airy News. “A lot of people would have to pay $75 or $80 an hour to have someone to show them how to build a Web site, and we’ll do it for free.”

I can see how some folks may end up paying those high prices in the quote above just to have a website.... But you DO NOT have to pay those high prices!!! They are saying they'll do it for free but from what I read that's WITH the upgrade cost?? Plus, using WordPress, you really don't have to "build" a website!

Have You Ever Wanted Your Own Website?

It's crazy how many times I get asked "how much does it cost to have a blog like JakeCpuNut"?  Usually people don't believe my response.  It's also crazy how many times I get a response like "gosh, I wish I could have a website where I could talk about my (insert whatever)"  The "insert whatever" can be anything... see people have all kinds of passions..

  • Pets
  • Religion
  • Sports
  • Cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Finance

just to name a few...

I think EVERYONE is passionate about "something"!  Here's the thing though... wouldn't you love to be able to write about your passion?  Have you ever wanted others to hear what YOU have to say about the thing or things you are passionate about?

I have a Facebook account, and it's interesting to see what the people on my friends list are passionate about just by reading their comments every day.

Do you own your own business?

Do you want more exposure and do you want to be able to write about the products you're selling?  No matter how big or small your business is, a website is almost a must in this day in time!  And if you're not a writer or don't want to write, you can still get more exposure to your business by having your own website!

Soooo what does it cost Jake to have this blog?

The last domain name I bought cost me $7.69 from Godaddy with a coupon.  Coupon code OYH3 always has worked for me and knocks $2.50 off the purchase of a .com domain name.  THAT PRICE IS GOOD FOR ONE YEAR!  Yup $7.69 A YEAR!

Go Daddy $7.49 .com Sale 125x125

For a web host, Hostgator is the only way to go in my opinion.  You can sign up for the Baby Croc plan at Hostgator and get UNLIMITED bandwidth, UNLIMITED disk space and UNLIMITED domains.  So if you wanted to have just 1 website or 100, you can have them all for $9.95 hosted at Hostgator!  If you wanted to pay for 3 years you can get it for as little as $7.95 per month.  Coupon code hostgatorcoupon gives you the first month for 1 cent! If you think that you would only ever have one website, then you can get by even cheaper and you can always upgrade later!

THAT'S IT!  There's your cost!  Less than 8 bucks a year for a domain name and less than 10 bucks a month for hosting!   Oh and there are litterly thousands of FREE WordPress themes available for you to choose from! Check it out... use the search box below and search for "free wordpress themes" and you'll be amazed at what's available!

Now I'm not gonna sit here and lie and say there aren't any other costs involved, but their doesn't have to be!  You don't have to have a logo made, like the one you see here on my blog, but if you do, I can hook you up CHEAP!  If you don't want to spend your time on SEO and getting inbound links, you can spend a few bucks to have that done for you!  But seriously folks, for a small price, you can have a blog and speak YOUR mind on whatever you are passionate about!

Oh But It's Too Hard - I Can't Learn How To Do It

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard that statement, I'd be wealthy!  You may need some direction to get started (I will help you in any way that I can), but you would be amazed at how simple having your own website can be!  Some people spend HOURS upon HOURS dolling up their Facebook and Myspace pages... if you can do that, with a little help, you can have your very own website!

And what if you tried it and didn't like it?  So what, at least you tried!  What if you tried it and it changed your life?  How cool would it be to share YOUR passion with the world?  I think it's awesome to be able to do that!

Remember you could definitely use your blog as a source of income, but that doesn't have to be the purpose of your website or blog. You could just use it for whatever your heart desires!

I don't advertise this here at JakeCpuNut, but if you want a blog and you really don't have time or patience or whatever the reason is... CONTACT ME and I can give you some pricing and set your blog up for you!

Are you passionate about something and always wanted to blog about it?

Are you intimidated by the thought of having your own website?

If you want to have your own website, WHAT'S STOPPING YOU?

If you already have your own website, how has it changed your life?

@ Uberlib – Welcome to “My Life as I See It” – There are definitely free web hosts out there.. BUT, there’s usually no support, limited options and many times they will place THEIR ads on your site! I don’t like that hahah..

    thanks for the comment!

I agree with you, Hostgator is good. I have had some issues but they are resolved in a timely manner. I use other hosting companies as well, but must admit for hosting blogs they are the best. Live Help, quick email response and CS on the phone.

The main thing which one invests in a blog in my view is time.

I personally invested $200 when I started my blog. My longtime friend who is an IT professional, took care of all of the technical aspects of setting it up, including domain name registration and all that.

In addition, I pay him $50 per year for any hosting and maintenance, and a small amount of tech support.

I know that paying someone to look after the technical side of things is an expensive option, but I feel that it’s worth it. I’d rather just get on with the writing and leave the technical stuff to someone who knows what they are doing.

@ Andrew – GREAT point! That’s definitely an option and of course we each have to figure what our time is worth etc etc.. I really enjoy the tech side myself!

Now on my other blogs, I’m just the opposite of what you’re speaking about.. I’d rather handle the tech side and pay someone to write articles for me on subjects I know nothing about haha!

@ Laura – I’ve been with HG for over a year now and like you I’ve had a couple of minor issues, but also like you said, they were very prompt and I LOVE tech support that has online chat like Hostgator does!

Jake ~ Did you get any more clarification on what they were charging and what it included? Just totally curious LOL … you know I agree with your choices – GoDaddy for domain and Hostgator for hosting … anyone who’s been with a bad host knows they better not cut cost/corners on hosting!
@makemoneyonline ~ I just did my first WordPress blog as a website with a blog attached and I’m loving it! Makes it all very easy to manage the website and I can still benefit from the blogging aspects too. *SmiLes* Suzanne
