Dang It! I Almost Reached That Goal!

7 September 2009 7 Comments

Here we are... I can't believe it's labor day already!  Gosh how time flies by!  We've had a great summer and still have plenty of plans and fun times ahead of us this year...  soon it will be Fall here in the NC Foothills and before you know it, Thanksgiving and Christmas!  Where does the time go???

Setting Goals and Reaching Those Goals!

I've mentioned before here on the blog, that I've started playing golf again after a few years off.  Remember me posting about "How Much it Cost Me to Play Golf".  hahaha... like I said in that post... NEVER add up the cost of your hobbies hahaha, just enjoy them and make sure you can afford them!

I played golf for quite a few years and just never could get any better.  I'm very competitive and I HATE losing against someone, but I'm also competitive with myself and hate it when I screw up or don't play to my full potential!  I never could figure out why I couldn't get any better.   I guess I could have taken lessons or something, but just never did...

Anyway, when I started back playing golf earlier this year, I had set a goal for myself that I want to accomplish THIS YEAR!  And that goal is for me to shoot in the 30's for 9 holes!!  I have never broken 40 and I want it sooo bad haha!  During all those earlier years of playing, I averaged probably 45 to 48 for 9 holes.  Sometimes I would have a better game and hit 43 or 44, but just never could get the numbers down.  My best game ever, which was many years back, was an 82 and I had shot 41 on both 9's.

So, here we are... 2009 and Jake is out playing golf this year with a goal in mind and yesterday I almost reached that goal!  My neighbor and I headed out early and I felt very focused and determined and after the first 9 I felt like that focus was paying off.  The first 9 holes I shot a 42, and that was with a double bogey on the first hole!  I felt great and was ready for the 2nd 9 holes!

This one particular course we play at is just a 9 hole course.  So that very first hole, or the 10th hole of the game, I double bogeyed!  UGGGGGGG hahaha... But, I buckled down and didn't allow that hole to frustrate me... I just put it behind me.  Things got much better!!!!

  • Hole # 1 Double Bogey @ +2
  • Hole # 2 Par @ +2
  • Hole # 3 Par @ +2
  • Hole # 4 Birdie @ +1
  • Hole # 5 Par  @ +1
  • Hole # 6 Par  @ +1
  • Hole # 7 Par  @ +1
  • Hole # 8 Double Bogey @ +3

So here I am, sitting at the # 9 hole, looking at my scorecard... I'm at 39 with one hold left to play...  It's a par 36 course and I'm 3 over so ALL I have to do is par this last hole and I've reached my goal of shooting in the 30's for the first time in my life!!  That double bogey at # 8 really hurt..

I had a great drive on # 9, but my chip in to the green was a little left so I still had a short chip and all I needed to do was get it close and par it!  Well the chip came up about 10 feet short so there I was, left with a 10 foot putt to shoot 39!  My hands were shaking and I wanted it sooooo bad hahahaha.  I had putted very well for most of the game so I did feel confident.  BUT.... I pulled the putt just a little and missed it left by a couple of inches....

SUCKS!!!!!! hahaha  I was right there... I had it in my hands and didn't reach my goal!  Oh well... I did feel great about my effort.  I don't know if the double bogey on # 8 rattled me or just the pressure of having to make a putt to save par on # 9.  Either way it SUCKED  hahaha.

Even though I didn't reach my goal, I did enjoy myself and was very happy that I had a new best score for me for 9 holes which was 40.  Beating my previous best of 41.

Are You Pursuing any Goals?

Of course golf isn't the only thing in my life that I have set goals that I want to reach.  I think we should all set goals, and we should work hard to reach those goals!  If you have set backs, DON'T GIVE UP!  Work harder, stay focused and I believe you will meet those goals!  I KNOW that with time, patience, practice and persistence, I WILL reach my goal!

So I encourage you to set goals in your life... it gives you something to work towards and it keeps you focused!  Of course it doesn't have to be golf.. it can be anything!  And that feeling of accomplishment you will have when you reach that goal, no matter how large or small it is... is a wonderful feeling!

Check out these great quotes below...

Feel free to share goals you have accomplished, or goals you have set to accomplish!

Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.
Fitzhugh Dodson

I feel that the most important step in any major accomplishment is setting a specific goal. This enables you to keep your mind focused on your goal and off the many obstacles that will arise when you're striving to do your best.
Kurt Thomas

Goals are dreams with deadlines.
Diana Scharf Hunt

You must have long term goals to keep you from being frustrated by short term failures.
Charles C. Noble

If you're bored with life -- you don't get up every morning with a burning desire to do things -- you don't have enough goals.
Lou Holtz

You can't hit a home run unless you step up to the plate. You can't catch a fish unless you put your line in the water. You can't reach your goals if you don't try.
Kathy Seligman

Goals are not only absolutely necesary to motivate us. They are essential to really keep us alive.
Robert H. Schuller

If you have a goal in life that takes a lot of energy, that requires a lot of work, that incurs a great deal of interest and that is a challenge to you, you will always look forward to waking up to see what the new day brings.
Susan Polis Schultz

You have to set goals that are almost out of reach. If you set a goal that is attainable without much work or thought, you are stuck with something below your true talent and potential.
Steve Garvey

The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goals to reach.
Benjamin Mays

You’ve been reading my blogs, Jake, so you know I’m big on goal setting. I’ve been following a plan for the past month, which ends this Friday, on trying to reach certain goals with both daily and weekly actions I’m supposed to take. I had one main goal and three secondary goals. I completed one of the secondary goals, but haven’t done as well on the other goals. Still, I have progressed, and when I set up for that second month, I’ll be altering my goals somewhat because I now have another project to complete. But none of them are far away from the main goal; just gotta get it done.

I hear ya Mitch.. we need that motivation and sense of accomplishment from setting, reaching for and accomplishing goals! And… even if we don’t reach those goals, the experience and drive we gain is worth the effort!

One of my friends posted this video on Facebook.. you may have seen it but it kinda goes along with setting goals and has some other interesting things in it.. well worth watching if you haven’t seen it!

I’ve seen a small part of it. I knew his story, and I don’t deal with not being alive all that well, so I’ve never made it through the entire thing, I hate to admit.
